Freeman Safford

 

Freeman Gunn Safford, 89, of Paris passed away at home on October 20, 2010.

She was born to Ida and Jesse Gunn on September 3, 1921 in Rockford , Texas . There were five girls born in the family, two of which died at 18 months and 24 months. The surviving girls were Mildred Gunn Fitzpatric, Mary Gunn Jackson, and Freeman Gunn Safford.

Freeman graduated from Paris High School in 1938, PJC in 1940, and East Texas University with a Bachelors degree in 1942 and a Masters degree in 1945. She taught school at Delmar and drove the school bus. She later went to Dallas and taught school until 1983 when she retired back to Paris .

Freeman married Francis Safford on November 27, 1963. They lived in Dallas where Francis was a stone mason and machinist. He served bravely in WWII. When they retired to Paris Mr. Safford opened a successful business as a machinist. Mr. Safford passed away in March of 1997. Freeman and Francis joined Calvary United Methodist Church on April 8, 1984 where they were faithful in attendance and generous in gifts.

Mrs. Safford is survived by a niece, Billie Gunn Penn and husband Horace Penn, a nephew Gary Melvin Jackson and wife Nancy Hanks Jackson all of Paris, Tx.; great nieces and nephews as follows: Dr. Charles Lay and wife Jeanie, Diane Lay Warren, Jimmy Lay, Robert James Jackson and wife Stormy Dockrey Jackson, Debbie Jackson Smith and husband Michael Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 23, 2010 in the chapel of Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with Rev. Rusty Hedges and Rev. Beverly Olsen officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery with Dr. Charles Lay, Robert Jackson, Jimmy Lay, Austin Warren, Bud Shannon, Kenn Meeske, and Travis Dodd serving as pallbearers. Mr. Edde Ellis will serve as an honorary pallbearer. Family will receive friends from 6:30 P.M. till 7:30 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.

The family would like to offer a special word of thanks to her loving caretakers, Cynthia Smith, Ruby Meeske, Georgia Walling and Sandy Love.
